U.S. Leads by Three After Day One of Ryder Cup

Published by xzchief at 9:27 pm under Golf Edit This

The U.S. Ryder Cup team performed very well Friday, claiming a 5.5 to 2.5 lead over Europe after the first day of the three-day competition. The team won three of four morning foursome matches. The Americans then took 2 1/2 points during the afternoon fourball matches. Saturday will feature the same format before Sunday’s 12 singles matches.

The Colorado Rockies’s reign as National League champions officially ended Thursday. The Rockies have struggled mightily all year. At the start of play Friday, Colorado sported a 70-83 record in the NL West Division. The Rockies did not play Thursday but division leader Los Angeles defeated Pittsburgh. Los Angeles has a record of 80-73. Both teams have nine games left so the 10-game margin is insurmountable.

West Virginia should be rethinking its hasty decision to hire then-interim coach Bill Stewart as full-time coach and sign him to a five-year contract. The inspired Mountaineers won the Fiesta Bowl in January against favored Oklahoma. The next day, Stewart promised never to leave Morgantown, WV and he got the job. Mountaineer fans were happy because their previous coach, Rich Rodriguez, left them to take the job at Michigan.

One emotional game should not have led to an emotion-based, rash decision to hire a man with no head coach experience. In football, if a man has passed his 60th birthday without becoming a head coach, something is wrong. So far this year, WVU is 1-2 and has looked sloppy in losses against East Carolina and Colorado.
