RIP, Paul Newman
I was saddened to hear that Paul Newman died today. I enjoyed his work in movies such as The Hustler, Slap Shot, Cool Hand Luke and The Color of Money, for which he won an Academy Award. He founded the Newman’s Own line of products, which has raised $250 million for charity. He devoted much of his later years to auto racing and became one of the best drivers and team owners in the sport. Best wishes to his loved ones.
Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies, won the National League East Division today. Both leagues now have three playoffs positions solidified and two teams apiece battling for the final spot. In the NL, Milwaukee and New York will play different opponents but each hopes to win while the other loses, lest they be required to meet in a one-game playoff Monday. In the American League, if Chicago wins its game Sunday, the White Sox will have to play against Detroit Monday. The game had been postponed by rain last week. After that game, Chicago might need to play Minnesota in a one-game playoff Tuesday. I’m rooting for as many postseason games as possible. Preferably with as many innings as possible.
College football was exciting today. Top-ranked USC lost Thursday and had company today. Georgia (#3), Florida (#4), Wisconsin (#9), Wake Forest (#16), Clemson (#20), Illinois (#22), East Carolina (#23) and Texas Christian (#24) all lost Saturday. Expect Oklahoma to be number one in tomorrow’s poll. The Sooners (4-0) trounced TCU, 35-10, tonight.
