Phillies Poised for Crown; Singletary Struggles in Debut

Published by xzchief at 11:01 pm under Baseball Edit This

Philadelphia is possibly one night from its first major professional sports championship since 1983. The Phillies lead the World Series, three games to one, following wins the past two nights at home. After blowing a 4-1 lead late in Game 3, Philadelphia scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with an infield single, 5-4. In tonight’s Game 4, the Tampa Bay Rays were worn down and blown out in the eighth inning en route to a 10-2 shellacking. Cole Hamels, Philadelphia’s ace pitcher, takes the ball in Monday’s Game 5 against Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir. Should the Rays win tomorrow, Game 6 will be Wednesday in Florida.

Week 8 of the National Football League went mostly according to form. Dallas squeaked past Tampa Bay, 13-9. The Tennessee Titans, the league’s last undefeated team, host AFC South rival Indianapolis Monday.

Mike Singletary lost his head coaching debut as the San Francisco 49ers were humbled, 34-13, by visiting Seattle. Singletary will learn quickly the 2008 49ers are not the 1985 Chicago Bears, for whom he was a Hall of Fame middle linebacker. Singletary tried to impose his stamp on the squad by telling past first-round draft choice, Vernon Walls, to leave the game during the fourth quarter. Wells is a talented but selfish player with $15 million in guaranteed money coming to him. It’s hard to believe any coach will be able to change him; Wells needs to alter his approach to the game.

I was really surprised at that yesterday. Though I guess Singletary is trying to show who’s boss. His stay there may be temporary if Holmgren decides to get back to the Niners next season.

The best thing he can do is win games. No one will care about his demeanor if the 49ers return to glory.
