Dungy Retires from Colts

Published by xzchief at 11:59 pm under Football Edit This

Tony Dungy retired Monday from the Indianapolis Colts, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and with outside interests. Dungy has been coaching the past 31 seasons, the last 13 as a head coach.

Dungy spent seven years building Tampa Bay from a doormat to a contender. He then went to Indianapolis, where he built the Colts from a contender to a champion. Indianapolis won the Super Bowl following the 2006 season. The Colts have averaged 12 wins a year the past six seasons.

A devout Christian, Dungy will likely focus more on his faith. In particular, Dungy has worked hard to develop a prison ministry network. He is the only African-American coach to win a Super Bowl and is considered an easy choice for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Colt assistant Jim Caldwell, tabbed the coach in waiting last year, was officially named the new coach Tuesday.
