Jankovic, Margarito, Notre Dame Among Saturday’s Losers

Published by xzchief at 11:43 pm under Tennis Edit This

Jelena Jankovic was drummed out of the Australian Open today by losing in the fourth round to Marion Bartoli, 6-1, 6-4. Jankovic remains the only female player ever ranked number one who lacks a Grand Slam title. Bartoli, seeded 16th at Melbourne Park, seems to be regaining the form that brought her to the Wimbledon final a few years ago.

Antonio Margarito lost his WBA middleweight title to Shane Mosley tonight after being stopped in the ninth round. Mosley (46-5, 39 knockouts) controlled the bout from the outset. Margarito (37-6, 27 KOs) was forced to retape his hands before putting on his gloves prior to the fight after a shiny substance was found on his hands.

Notre Dame’s 45-game home-court winning streak was snapped by Connecticut, 69-61. Notre Dame (12-6) lost its third straight game and saw its 20-game Big East Conference home-court winning streak ended. Connecticut (17-1) is the first conference opponent to win in South Bend since 2005.
