U.S. Beats Mexico in World Cup Qualifier
The U.S. soccer team defeated Mexico, 2-0, in Columbus in the first match of the of the final round of CONCACAF region qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
With the win, the U.S. gained three points and sits at the top of the table. Mexico is at the bottom but nine matches remain for both teams. Costa Rice, Honduras, El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago are also in the six-nation group.
After a double round-robin of home and away matches, the top three countries will qualify for next year’s World Cup in South Africa. The fourth-place team will advance to a last-chance qualifier against the fifth-place team from South America.
In other matches Wednesday, Costa Rica defeated visiting Honduras, 2-0, and host El Salvador played Trinidad & Tobago to a 2-2 draw. Qualifying will continue through 2009.
