Chad Campbell shot a 65 to lead after the first round of the Masters Thursday. Campbell, runner-up in the 2003 PGA Championship, set a Masters record by birdieing the first five holes.
Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan trail by one stroke. Shingo Katayama and Larry Mize, the 1987 Masters winner, each shot a 67. Thursday was a good day for 50-something golfers at Augusta. Beside Mize, two-time champ Bernhard Langer and three-time runner-up Greg Norman both carded 70.
Tiger Woods also shot a 70, matching his best-ever opening round at the Masters. Woods registered a first-round 70 three previous times. He won the tournament each year. Second-round play begins at 8 a.m. eastern Friday.
