Anthony Leads Nuggets Past Mavericks

Alexander Ovechkin tied tonight’s game against Pittsburgh twice but his Washington Capitals fell to Penguins in overtime, 4-3. Pittsburgh leads the series, 3-2, after dropping the first two games. Chicago scored two goals in the last 5:05 to win at Vancouver, 4-2, and take a three-games-to-two lead in the series.

Carmelo Anthony’s three-point shot with one second to play lifted Denver to a shocking 106-105 win at Dallas. Denver leads the series, 3-0. Dallas led, 105-103, with seven seconds left and planned to foul a Denver player before a shot attempt. The Mavericks had a “foul to give” so Denver would have to inbound the ball again instead of running the planned play. The attempted foul was not called though and Anthony drilled a 25-foot jumper from the right wing. Dirk Nowitzki’s desperation heave at the buzzer fell well short for Dallas. The NBA admitted a foul should have been called. Little consolation for the Mavericks.

LeBron James tallied 47 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists as Cleveland broke open a tight contest in the final period to win at Atlanta, 97-82. Atlanta led, 67-66, early in the fourth quarter but James took over the last 12 minutes. Cleveland leads the series, 3-0. Houston must finish the season without All-Star center Yao Ming who broke his left foot in Friday’s loss to Los Angeles. Yao has broken his left foot three of the past four seasons.

Mark Martin won his second NASCAR race in a month, taking the checkered flag at the Southern 500 at Darlington tonight. Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon completed the top five.

Alex Cejka managed just a 72 but expanded his lead to five shots entering Sunday’s final round of the Players Championship. Tiger Woods shot a 70 to join a group of six players at six-under par. Woods will play in the last pairing tomorrow with Cejka, who sits at 11-under par following 54 holes.
