Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League final over Manchester United Wednesday, 2-0. The Spanish side was paced by a goal each half to claim the title match in Rome. Manchester United’s 25-match unbeaten Champions League streak was snapped.

The French Open has reached the second round with the strongest contenders still in the mix. Rafael Nadal smashed Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Nadal will play Lleyton Hewitt, a former world number one player, in the third round. Maria Sharapova outlasted 11th-seeded Nadia Petrova, 6-1, 2-6, 8-6. There are no tiebreaks in the last set at the French Open. Sharapova is in her first tournament of 2009 after a shoulder injury cut short her 2008 campaign. Venus Williams dropped the first set, 7-6, to Lucie Safarova. Darkness halted play before the second set could begin.

The World Series of Poker began today in Las Vegas with the casino employees’ event. The first open event starts Thursday. In honor of the WSOP’s 40th anniversary, there will be a special 40th anniversary no-limit Texas hold’em event with a $40,000 buy-in. One or two tournaments will start most days during June. The main event begins July 3.
