Penguins Win Stanley Cup
Pittsburgh won its first Stanley Cup since 1992 by winning at Detroit, 2-1, in tonight’s seventh game of the final. Maxime Talbot scored twice in the second period for Pittsburgh after a scoreless first period. Jonathan Ericsson got Detroit on the board in the last stanza but the Red Wings could not tie the score.
The home team had won the first six games of the series. Detroit had easily won its three previous home contests by a total score of 11-2. Pittsburgh star winger Sidney Crosby missed most of the second half of the game after getting crunched along the boards. He seemed to suffer a leg injury.
Nonetheless, 21-year-old Crosby is the youngest-ever captain of a Stanley Cup champion. Evgeni Malkin earned the Conn Smythe Trophy, which is awarded the postseason’s most valuable player. With the win, Pittsburgh avenged its six-game defeat to Detroit in last year’s final and won its first NHL title since owner Mario Lemieux was the star center in 1991 and 1992.
Anna Nordqvist, a rookie from Sweden, leads at the midway point of the LPGA Championship. Her second-round 70 was enough to take a one-stroke lead over first-day leader Nicole Castrale, who’s 72 Friday left her at seven-under par for the tournament. Katherine Hull and Lindsay Wright are both six-under par after 36 holes. World number-one Lorena Ochoa is five shots off the lead while Michelle Wie stands at even par through two rounds.
Tornado warnings stopped play in Memphis before the second round of the St. Jude Classic finished. The round is scheduled to finish Saturday morning. The third round will start Saturday afternoon. Brian Gay managed to complete 36 holes. He leads at 10-under par. He leads Bryce Molder (who completed his second round) and Robert Allenby (who must play three holes tomorrow morning) by two shots each.
