Barnes Leads After 36 Holes
Ricky Barnes set a 36-hole U.S. Open scoring record Saturday to hold a one-shot lead entering Sunday’s action. Barnes’s two-round total of 132 put him one shot ahead of Lucas Glover and two stroles clear of Mike Weir.
Barnes won the 2002 U.S. Amateur and greatness was predicted for him. He’s taken more time than most onlookers expected to start blossoming but tomorrow can be the birth of his career. Sunday will certainly be long. The third round was barely started before play was halted at 7 p.m. eastern due to another rainstorm. Heavy rain is expected overnight. Play is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Barnes will need to play 36 holes to win tomorrow, unless the tournament is extended.
Carl Edwards won the Nationwide Series race tonight. Spain and South Africa advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA Confederations Cup. New Zealand and Iraq were eliminated. Brazil, Egypt, Italy and the U.S. will try to fill the last two spots in the semifinals Sunday.
