Griffin Drafted First

Published by xzchief at 11:52 pm under NBA Edit This

Blake Griffin was the first overall draft pick in tonight’s NBA Draft. The Clippers selected the all-American forward from the University of Oklahoma in a move that surprised no one. Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet was chosen by Memphis. Oklahoma City then picked James Harden, a guard from Arizona State. University of Memphis guard Tyreke Evans went to Sacramento fourth. Minnesota tabbed Ricky Rubio, a point guard from Barcelona.

Brazil edged South Africa, 1-0, in a FIFA Confederations Cup semifinal. Brazil will battle the U.S. in Sunday’s final. Second-half substitute Daniel Alves converted a free kick from just outside the penalty box in the 86th minute for the game’s only goal.

Juan Martin del Potro was upset by Lleyton Hewitt today at Wimbledon, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. Fifth-seeded Del Porto, given injured Rafael Nadal’s top spot in the draw, was ousted by Hewitt, a former number-one ranked player. The other men’s seeds in action Thursday won second-round matches. No women’s seeded players lost today. Among the winners were Dinara Safina, Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic.

Kenny Perry leads the PGA Tour event near Hartford after one round. His 63 leads Paul Goydos and Charles Warren by two strokes each. Sandra Gal is the first-round leader at the LPGA tournament in Rochester. Play was suspended due to darkness before every player finished her opening round.
