Federer Advances at Wimbledon
Roger Federer dropped a third-set tiebreak before eliminating Philipp Kohlschreiber today, 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1. Novak Djokovic, Fernando Verdasco and Robin Soderling also won Friday. Ivo Karlovic upset Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets. Dudi Sela bounced Tommy Robredo in four sets.
Serena Williams handled Roberta Vinci, 6-4, 6-3, during today’s third-round action. Elena Dementieva, Victoria Azarenka, Nadia Petrova and Daniela Hantuchova also won. Verz Zvonareva withdrew from her match against Virginie Razzano, allowing the Frenchwoman to prevail by walkover. Marion Bartoli was upended by Francesca Schiavone in straight sets. Dominika Cibulkova was knocked off by Elena Vesnina in three sets. Winners today advance to Monday’s fourth round, as will the victors of Saturday’s matches.
Rain in the Northeast delayed golf action today. Jiyal Shin leads Morgan Pressel by three shots after Friday’s play in Rochester, New York. Kenny Perry is the overnight leader in Connecticut.
