Ronaldo Signs with Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo, FIFA’s World Footballer of the Year, finalized a six-year contract with Real Madrid today. Real Madrid paid Ronaldo’s current club, Manchester United, a world-record transfer fee of $131 million. Ronaldo officially joins his new squad July 1.
The men’s and women’s singles draws have reached the last 16 at Wimbledon. Play resumes Monday as the tournament takes off the middle Sunday as usual. In the men’s bracket, Lleyton Hewitt will play Radek Stepanek, Tomas Berdych faces Andy Roddick, Andy Murray battles Stanislas Wawrinka, Juan Carlos Ferraro faces Gilles Simon, Tommy Haas plays Igor Andreev, Dudi Sela competes against Novak Djokovic, Fernando Verdasco squares off against Ivo Karlovic and Roger Federer is rematched against French Open finalist Robin Soderling.
On the women’s side, Dinara Safina faces Amelie Mauresmo, Caroline Wozniacki meets Sabine Liscki, Venus Williams battles Ana Ivanovic, Agnieszka Radwanska plays Melanie Oudin, Virginie Razzano meets Francesca Schiavone, Elena Vesnina battles Elena Dementieva, Victoria Azarenka battles Nadia Petrova and Serena Williams competes against Daniela Hantuchova.
Paul Goydos shot a 63 to lead the PGA Tour event in Connecticut by one stroke after 54 holes. Kenny Perry is in second place. Jiyai Shin leads Morgan Pressel by four shots entering Sunday’s final round at the LPGA stop in Rochester. Fred Funk holds the 36-hole lead at the Champions Tour event in Endicott, New York. Retief Goosen is the leader following three rounds at the European Tour’s event in Munich.
Kyle Busch won his fifth Nationwide Series race of the year today in New Hampshire. Tony Stewart has the pole for tomorrow’s NASCAR Cup Series race after race Friday canceled qualifying.
