Among the notable trades Friday, All-Star catcher Victor Martinez was sent from Cleveland to Boston. San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy rejected a trade to Chicago in May but the injured former Cy Young winner accepted a deal to the White Sox today. Los Angeles acquired reliever George Sherrill. Teams will be able to make trades through August but the involved players will have to clear waivers first.
Tiger Woods fired a 63 today to climb from 95th to fourth place at the PGA Tour event in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Woods trails leader John Senden by four shots. Senden completed 36 holes in 14-under par. Graeme Storm and Steve Webster share the midway lead at the European Tour stop in the Czech Republic.
Catriona Matthew and Giulia Sergas are the second-round co-leaders at the Women’s Open Championship. Amateur Tim Jackson leads the U.S. Senior Open by one stroke over Joey Sindelar.

Steve Lowery’s 63 earned him the first-round lead at the Buick Open in suburban Flint. Tiger Woods carded a 71 and sits in 95th place. Greg Norman, Tim Jackson, Joey Sindelar and Dan Forsman are tied atop the U.S. Senior Open after each man recorded a 66.
Sandra Gal fired a 69 to claim the lead after one round of the Women’s Open Championship. Tano Goya’s sizzling 65 leads the European Tour event in the Czech Republic.
Major League Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline is Friday at 4 p.m. eastern. Once upon a time, the deadline was 11:59 p.m. eastern July 31. Therefore, players were sometimes traded during games. Players had even managed to play for one team, get traded, and play for a second team the same day.

Formula 1 racing legend Michael Schumacher will come out of retirement to replace Felipe Massa. Massa was severely injured at last week’s Hungarian Grand Prix and will miss the remainer of the season. Schumacher is expected to begin racing next month.
Randy Johnson was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list today after a slight tear in his rotator cuff was detected. Johnson, 45, won his 300th game earlier this season.
Philadelphia acquired reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee from Cleveland for four minor leaguers. Cleveland also dealt Ben Francisco to Philadelphia. It’s the second year in a row the Indians have traded the reigning Cy Young winner. Last July, Cleveland dealt CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. He later signed with New York.
