Sanchez Tosses No-Hitter

Jonathan Sanchez threw the first no-hitter of the season Friday as San Francisco blanked San Diego, 7-0. Only an eighth-inning error kept Sanchez from a perfect game.

Croatia leads its Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against the visiting U.S., 2-0. Ivo Karlovic rallied past James Blake, 6-7 (5), 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 7-5. Marin Cilic edged Mardy Fish, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 8-6. Bob and Mike Bryan will try to keep the U.S. team alive Saturday against Karlovic and Lovro Zarko.

The Czech Republic and Argentina are tied at one. Tomas Berdych squeaked past Juan Monaco, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Juan Martin del Potro evened the tie by beating Ivo Minar, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Spain and Germany are also even after the first day. Fernando Verdasco won for the host against Andreas Beck, 6-0, 3-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1. Philipp Kohlschreiber dispatched Tommy Robredo, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Host Israel leads Russia, 2-0, after Harel Levy and Dudi Sela won singles matches.

Cristie Kerr leads the U.S. Women’s Open by a shot. LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens will leave her job soon. Retief Goosen leads the Scottish Open. Rain delayed the second round of the John Deere Classic. Joey Logano won the Nationwide Series race tonight.
