Sol to Host WPS Final
Los Angeles defeated host Boston, 2-1, today to eliminate Boston from WPS postseason contention. The Sol finished the 20-match regular season with 41 points and will host the championship match Aug. 22. Saint Louis drew with host FC Gold Pride, 1-1, Sunday, and maintained second place. The Athletica will host the semifinal Aug. 19.
Washington clinched a playoff berth by beating visiting Sky Blue FC, 3-1, Saturday. The Freedom will host the quarterfinal Aug. 15. Thanks to Boston not winning today, Sky Blue gets the fourth and final playoff spot. Sky Blue travels from New Jersey to Maryland for a rematch against Washington.
Indiana has won its last five consecutive games to extend its WNBA-best record to 17-4. Phoenix continues to lead the Western Conference with a 16-7 mark.
Flavia Pennetta defeated Samantha Stosur, 6-4, 6-3, to claim the Los Angeles Women’s Tennis Championship. Juan Martin del Potro edged Andy Roddick, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6) to win the ATP event in Washington D.C.
CONCACAF World Cup qualifying resumes Wednesday. Leader Costa Rica (with 12 points) visits Honduras (currently third with seven points). The U.S. (second, 10 points) goes to Mexico (fourth, six points). El Salvador (fifth, five points) travels to Trinidad and Tobago (sixth, two points).
