Angels, Yankees to Meet in ALCS
The American League Championship Series is set. Los Angeles scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to stun Boston at Fenway Park Sunday, 7-6, and sweep the Division Series. The Angels will face New York, which eliminated Minnesota, 4-1, to take the series, 3-0, and close the Twins’ run at the Metrodome. New York will host the first two games of the best-of-seven ALCS Friday and Saturday before the scene moves to Anaheim next week.
Philadelphia and Colorado are tied at 5 in the eighth inning of the third game of their National League Division Series. Los Angeles will host the winner starting Thursday in the League Championship Series. Game 4 will be Monday in Denver. Game 5, if necessary, will be Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Jimmie Johnson won the NASCAR Cup Series race in Fontana, California. Ross McGowan coasted to a three-shot win at the Madrid Masters.
In the NFL Sunday, Cleveland (1-4) beat Buffalo (1-4), 6-3. Pittsburgh (3-2) defeated Detroit (1-4), 28-20. Dallas (3-2) edged Kansas City (0-5) in overtime, 26-20. Minnesota (5-0) thrashed St. Louis (0-5), 38-10. New York (5-0) crushed Oakland (1-4), 44-7. Philadelphia (3-1) dismantled Tampa Bay (0-5), 33-14. Carolina (1-3) squeaked past Washington (2-3), 20-17. Cincinnati (4-1) rallied past Baltimore (3-2), 17-14. Atlanta (3-1) humbled San Francisco (3-2), 45-10. Denver (5-0) stunned New England (3-2) in overtime, 20-17. Arizona (2-2) handled Houston (2-3), 28-21. Seattle (2-3) blanked Jacksonville (2-3), 41-0. Indianapolis (5-0) clobbered Tennessee (0-5), 31-9.
The U.S. won the Presidents Cup, 18.5-11.5. The Americans won six of the 12 heads-up matches to keep the cup and boost its overall record to 6-1-1 against the International team. Justin Leonard and Mike Weir halved their match, as did Lucas Glover and Vijay Singh. For the Internationals, Geoff Ogilvy beat Steve Stricker, 2 and 1. Ryo Ishikawa defeated Kenny Perry, 2 and 1. Tim Clark thumped Zach Johnson, 4 and 3. Angel Cabrera dispatched Jim Furyk, 4 and 3.
For the U.S., Hunter Mahan handled Camilo Villegas, 2 and 1. Stewart Cink smashed Adam Scott, 4 and 3. Anthony Kim thrashed Robert Allenby, 5 and 3. Sean O’Hair crushed Ernie Els, 6 and 4. Tiger Woods dispatched Y.E. Yang, 6 and 5. Phil Mickelson beat Retief Goosen, 2 and 1.
