Yankees Outlast Angels; Johnson Wins in NC
New York rallied to defeat Los Angeles, 4-3, in 13 innings Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series. Game 3 will be Monday in southern California.
Jerry Hairston Jr. scored the winning run as the result of a Maizur Izturis throwing error. Alex Rodriguez’s 11th-inning home run tied the game after Garry Matthews Jr. scored on a a Chone Figgins single in the top of the frame to give the Angels a 3-2 advantage.
Jimmie Johnson won the NASCAR Cup race in North Carolina tonight and extended his points lead. Johnson has won three of the five Chase events. Five races are left in the season.
Retief Goosen’s 64 today put him ahead of Francesco Molinari by one shot entering the final round of the Portugal Masters. Chad Campbell and Scott Piercy share the 54-hole lead at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.
After playing to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, Ghana defeated Brazil, 4-3, on penalty kicks to win the 20-and-under World Cup Friday in South Africa. Ghana is the first African nation to win the U-20 championship.
The MLS regular season is reaching the final week. Five teams–Columbus, Chivas USA, Los Angeles, Houston and Seattle–have clinched playoff berths. Three more spots are available. Chicago and Colorado would claim two of them if the season ended today. Four other squads–Toronto, New England, D.C. United and Dallas–are deadlocked for the last bid at 39 points.
California (1-1) trounced New York (0-2) in a UFL game Saturday in San Francisco. Saskatchewan played to a 44-44 tie at Calgary. Both teams are now 8-6-1 and still share the CFL’s West Division lead.
