New York crushed Los Angeles, 10-1, in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series tonight. The Yankees lead the best-of-seven series, three games to one. CC Sabathia, pitching on three days’ rest instead of the customary four days, limited the Angels to one run over eight innings. He matched the performance he gave in Game 1.

Scott Kazmir, in contrast, struggled throughout the game. He allowed five runs in four-plus innings. Game 5 is Thursday in southern California.

The UEFA Champions League began Matchday 3 Tuesday. In Group E, Fiorentina won at Debreceni, 4-3, and Lyon rallied past host Liverpool, 2-1. In Group F, Rubin Kazan won at Barcelona, 2-1, and Dynamo Kyiv drew at Inter Milan, 2-2.

In Group G, Sevilla triumphed at Stuttgart, 3-1, and Unirea Urziceni won at Rangers, 4-1. In Group H, Olympiacos defeated visiting Standard Liege, 2-1, and Arsenal drew at Alkmaar, 1-1. The first half of the group stage will conclude Wednesday.

The NFL trading deadline passed Tuesday without a major deal. Philadelphia acquired Will Weatherspoon from St. Louis from Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round draft pick next year. According to media reports, the NBA will agree to a contract with its officials in time for opening day Oct. 27. Replacement referees have been used throughout the exhibition season.
