Angels Stay Alive; FSU Rallies at UNC

Published by xzchief at 11:04 pm under Baseball Edit This

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim extended their season by rallying past the New York Yankees, 7-6, in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. Game 6 will be Saturday in New York. The Angels couldn’t have started better. The first four batters reached base against Yankee starter A.J. Burnett and all four scored.

Burnett recovered though and kept the Angels from scoring again through six innings. However, with Angel ace John Lackey on the mound, a 4-0 advantage seemed like plenty. Lackey was removed by manager Mike Scioscia with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh. The Los Angeles bullpen failed to stop the New York rally and the Angels trailed, 6-4.

Burnett allowed the first two batters to reach base in the bottom of the seventh and manager Joe Girardi relieved him. The Angels scored three runs against New York middle relievers to retake the lead. New York left the bases loaded in the ninth.

Florida State erased an 18-point third-quarter deficit to defeat North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 30-27. FSU (3-4, 1-3) trailed North Carolina (4-3, 0-3), 24-6, before starting its comeback. The Seminoles entered the game with a 2-4 mark, their worst season-opening mark since 1976. Both teams were in the unusual position of being at the bottom of their divisions with the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Nick O’Hern leads the PGA Tour event in Scottsdale, Arizona. The first round of the Castello Masters wasn’t completed due to high winds delaying play. Sergio Garcia leads so far in the first round.

Pittsburgh is atop the NHL standings with 16 points and an 8-1 record. Colorado, with a 6-1-2 mark, leads the Western Conference with 14 points. Toronto, at 0-6-1, is struggling. So is 2-6 Minnesota.

Florida (3-0) crushed visiting California (1-2), 34-7, in a UFL game tonight. Las Vegas (1-1) and New York (0-2) have a bye this week.
