Yankees Win Pennant
New York earned its 40th American League pennant and first since 2003 by defeating Los Angeles, 5-2, in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. The Yankees won the series, four games to two. Andy Pettitte threw 6 1/3 innings and won his 16th postseason game and fifth series-clinching victory. Both marks are Major League Baseball records.
Meanwhile, Joe Saunders struggled through 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. Mariano Rivera retired the side in order in the ninth to notch the save. The World Series begins Wednesday. Defending champion Philadelphia comes to Yankee Stadium for Games 1 and 2.
Pittsburgh (5-2) upset previously unbeaten Minnesota (6-1), 27-17, at home today. Elsewhere around the league, Green Bay (4-2) crushed Cleveland (1-6), 31-3. San Diego (3-3) clubbed Kansas City (1-6), 37-7. Indianapolis (6-0) throttled St. Louis (0-7), 42-6. New England (5-2) smashed Tampa Bay (0-7) in London, 35-7. Houston (4-3) edged San Francisco (3-3), 24-21.
In other games, the New York Jets (4-3) blanked Oakland (2-5), 38-0. Buffalo (3-4) dispatched Carolina (2-4), 20-9. Cincinnati (5-2) dismantled Chicago (3-3), 45-10. Dallas (4-2) crunched Atlanta (4-2). New Orleans (6-0) rallied past Miami (2-4), 46-34. Arizona (4-2) stunned the New York Giants (5-2).
Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Cup Series race in Martinsville. Timothy Peters claimed the Truck Series race in Virginia Saturday.
Troy Matteson birdied the second playoff hole to beat Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark and win the PGA Tour event in Scottsdale. Phil Blackmar won the Champions Tour stop in San Antonio. Michael Jonzen claimed the Castello Masters.
