Lee Goes Distance to Lead Philly Win

Published by xzchief at 11:12 pm under Baseball Edit This

Cliff Lee pitched a six-hitter and allowed no earned runs as Philadelphia defeated New York, 6-1, in the opening game of the World Series. Game 2 will be Thursday. Pedro Martinez is slated to pitch for the Phillies against the Yankees’ A.J. Burnett.

Lee outdueled New York ace CC Sabathia. Sabathia was nearly flawless for seven innings. His only mistakes were two homeruns allowed to Chase Utley. Utley’s solo blasts in the third and sixth innings staked Philadelphia to a 2-0 lead entering the eighth inning. The Yankee middle relief was quite flawed though, allowing two runs in each of the last two innings. New York managed an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to avoid a shutout.

Most of the NBA teams started play tonight. Atlanta defeated Indiana, 120-109. Orlando beat Philadelphia, 120-106. Toronto upended Cleveland despite LeBron James’ triple-double, 101-91. Boston humbled Charlotte, 92-59. Miami smashed New York, 115-93.

In other games, Detroit dispatched Memphis, 96-74. Minnesota nipped New Jersey, 95-93. Oklahoma City thumped Sacramento, 102-89. San Antonio ran past New Orleans, 113-96. Denver handled Utah, 114-105. Houston edged Golden State, 108-107. Phoenix outlasted the L.A. Clippers, 109-107.

Colorado is off to the hottest start in the NHL. The Avalanche has totaled 22 points with a 10-1-2 record. Minnesota (3-9) is in last place within the Western Conference with six points. Pittsburgh (10-2) leads the Eastern Conference with 20 points. Toronto (1-7-2) is at the bottom of the conference with four points.

The MLS playoffs are set. The two-leg conference semifinals begin tomorrow. The dates and times of the first legs follow. All times are Eastern. The second legs will be held next week.

Houston at Seattle: Thursday, 10 p.m.
