New York slugged three home runs en route to an 8-5 win over Philadelphia in Game 3 of the World Series. CC Sabathia will pitch tomorrow on short rest for the Yankees against the Phillies’ Joe Blanton. Philadelphia scored three runs off Andy Pettitte in the second inning, paced by the first of two home runs by Jayson Werth.

However, Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the fourth of the reigning World Series Most Valuable Player, Cole Hamels, to get the Yankees on the scoreboard. Hamels pitched poorly after a strong beginning. He lasted 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. Pettitte steadied himself after a tough start and lasted six innings to notch the win.

Oregon crushed USC, 47-20, in Eugene to take control of the Pac-10 conference. The #10 Ducks (7-1, 5-0) have recovered marvelously from a season-opening debacle at Boise State. Meanwhile, the #5 Trojans (6-2, 3-2) must strengthen their once-proud defense.

Third-ranked Texas (8-0) hammered #14 Oklahoma State (7-1), 41-14. Tennessee (4-4) upended #22 South Carolina (6-3), 31-13. Auburn (5-3) upset #25 Mississippi (5-3), 33-20.

Anthony Kim will face Ross Fisher in the 36-hole final of the World Match Play Championship Sunday. Kim dispatched Robert Allenby in a 36-hole semifinal Saturday, 5 and 4. Fisher outlasted Angel Cabrera after 39 holes.

Ian Poulter leads early in the final round at the Singapore Open. The PGA Tour event in Madison, Mississippi after a heavy rainstorm Friday left the course unplayable. The final tournament of the year starts Nov. 12 in Orlando.

Yani Tseng and Maria Hjorth are tied for the lead midway through the last round of the LPGA Tour stop in South Korea. John Cook is atop the Champions Tour Cup Championship with 18 holes to play.

Serena Williams will meet her sister, Venus, in the final of the WTA Tour Championship Sunday. Serena, who will be the year-end number one player, advanced when Caroline Wozniacki retired Saturday due to a left abdominal strain while trailing, 6-4, 0-1. Venus rallied past Jelena Jankovic, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, in the other semifinal. The sisters lost a doubles semifinal today in three sets.

In CFL games Saturday, Hamilton (8-9) upended visiting Saskatchewan (9-7-1), 24-6, and Calgary (10-6-1) kicked a field goal with one second left to beat British Columbia (8-9), 28-26, in Vancouver. Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Truck Series race at Talladega.
