Rodriguez Spurs New York Triumph

Alex Rodriguez’s two-run double in the ninth inning off Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge lifted New York to a 7-4 victory in Game 4 of the World Series. The Yankees lead the series, three games to one. Cliff Lee, who pitched a complete game to win Game 1 for the Phillies, will start Monday’s Game 5 against A.J. Burnett, who started and won Game 2.

Indianapolis (7-0) is one of two unbeaten teams left in the NFL after edging San Francisco (3-4), 18-14. Denver (6-1) dropped its first game, 30-7, at Baltimore (4-3). Houston (5-3) trounced Buffalo (3-5), 31-10. Chicago (4-3) embarrassed Cleveland (1-7), 30-6. Dallas (5-2) thrashed Seattle (2-5), 38-17. St. Louis (1-7) earned its first win by beating Detroit (1-6), 17-10. Tennessee (1-6) also won its first game with a 30-13 triumph against Jacksonville (3-4).

Elsewhere, Miami (3-4) outlasted the New York Jets (4-4), 30-25. Philadelphia (5-2) hammered the New York Giants (5-3), 40-17. San Diego (4-3) held off Oakland (2-6), 24-16. Brett Favre led Minnesota (7-1) to a 38-26 over Green Bay (4-3) at Lambeau Field, his old haunt for 16 years. Carolina (3-4) won at Arizona (4-3), 34-21.

Serena Williams won the WTA Tour Championship in Doha, Qatar by beating Venus Williams, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez claimed the doubles crown by beating the number-one duo of Cara Black and Liezel Huber, 7-6 (0), 5-7, (10-7).

Ross Fisher won the World Match Play Championship by defeating Anthony Kim, 4 and 3, in the 36-hole final. Robert Allenby earned third place after winning the first extra hole when his 18-hole match against Angel Cabrera finished all square.

Ian Poulter won the Singapore Open. Na Yeon Choi claimed the LPGA tournament in South Korea. John Cook won the Champions Tour Cup Championship but Loren Roberts earned the season-long Cup victory.

The New York Rangers blanked Boston, 1-0, in an NHL game Sunday. Around the league, Vancouver shut out Colorado, 3-0. San Jose dispatched Carolina, 5-1. Columbus beat Washington, 5-4, in overtime.

Los Angeles and Chivas USA played to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their MLS playoff series. Real Salt Lake defeated Columbus, 1-0. New England beat Chicago, 2-1.

Jamie McMurray won the NASCAR Cup Series race in Talladega. Central Florida (5-3, 3-2 Mid-American) rallied past Marshall (5-4, 3-2), 21-20, in Orlando. Montreal (14-3) crushed visiting Winnipeg (7-10), 48-13, in a CFL game today. Next week marks the end of the CFL regular season.
