Phillies Extend World Series, 8-6
Cliff Lee wasn’t quite as dominating Monday as he’s been throughout the postseason but he pitched well enough for Philadelphia to win Game 5 of the World Series, 8-6. New York still leads the series, three games to two, and will host Game 6 Wednesday. Pedro Martinez will face Andy Pettitte.
Lee reached the eighth inning before being chased. He allowed five runs but he was far better than Yankee hurler A.J. Burnett, who managed just six outs before being lifted in the third inning. He allowed six runs. New York scored once in the ninth and twice brought the tying run to the plate. Ryan Madson struck out Mark Teixeira to end the game.
New Orleans extended its unbeaten record to 7-0 with a 35-27 victory over NFC South rival Atlanta. The Falcons fell to 4-3.
Sebastian Vettel won the season-ending Formula 1 race Sunday in Abu Dhabi. Jenson Button, who had already clinched the F1 championship, finished third.
The New York Islanders defeated visiting Edmonton, 3-1, in an NHL game tonight. Elsewhere, Los Angeles rallied past host Phoenix, 5-3. Philadelphia thumped guest Tampa Bay, 6-2.
A bankruptcy court today approved the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes to the NHL. Three investor groups are rumored to be interested in buying the team. The league wants to keep the Coyotes in Arizona.
