Tiger Wins in Melbourne

Tiger Woods won the Australian Masters Sunday in his first tournament on the continent in a decade. Woods fired a final-round 68 and outpaced Greg Chalmers by two shots.

Texas Christian staked a claim on a BCS berth as the #4 Horned Frogs (10-0, 6-0) won their Mountain West showdown against #16 Utah (8-2, 5-1), 55-28, in Fort Worth. Stanford won at #9 USC for the second time in a row. The Cardinal (7-3, 5-2 Pac-10) humbled the Trojans (7-3, 4-3), 55-21. USC had never allowed 55 points in a game.

North Carolina (7-3, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) upset #14 Miami (7-3, 4-3), 33-24. Central Florida (6-4, 4-2 Conference USA) stunned #15 Houston (8-2, 4-2) 37-32. California (7-3, 4-3 Pac-10) shocked #17 Arizona (6-3, 4-2), 24-16.

Gregory Bourdy leads midway through the final round of the Hong Kong Open. Mathias Gronberg, Justin Leonard, George McNeill and Justin Rose are tied atop the Children’s Miracle Network Classic after three rounds. Cristie Kerr and Michelle Wie share the 54-hole lead at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

Carl Edwards claimed the Nationwide Series victory in Phoenix today. Kevin Harvick won the Truck Series race Friday. Ron Hornaday finished fourth which was enough to clinch his fourth series crown. At age 51, Hornaday is the oldest-ever NASCAR series champion.

Manny Pacquiao claimed his seventh world boxing title Saturday with a technical knockout of WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao knocked down Cotto in the third and fourth rounds and battered him relentlessly until the fight was stopped 55 seconds into the 12th and final round.

Randy Couture beat Brandon Vera by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 105 in Manchester, England. All three judges scored the fight, 29-28, for Couture (17-10). However, the audience and ringside press generally thought Vera (11-4) should have won.

The MLS Cup is set for Nov. 22 in Seattle. Los Angeles defeated Houston, 2-0, in overtime to win the Western Conference Friday. Real Salt Lake beat Chicago in the Eastern final Saturday on penalty kicks, 5-4, after 120 minutes of play produced a goalless result.
