Iverson Announces Retirement
Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League’s group stage concluded Wednesday. In Group A, Bordeaux (13 points) blanked visiting Juventus (eight points), 2-0, and Bayern Munich (seven points) shut out guest Maccabi Haifa (zero points), 1-0. In Group B, CSKA Moscow (seven points) beat visiting Wolfsburg (seven points), 2-1, and Beskitas (four points) won at Manchester United (10 points), 1-0.
In Group C, Marseille (seven points) drew at AC Milan (eight points), 1-1, and Real Madrid (10 points) defeated visiting Zurich (three points), 1-0. In Group D, Chelsea (13 points) won at Porto (nine points), 1-0, and Athletico Madrid (three points) tied at APOEL (two points), 1-1. The last group matches will be played Dec. 8 and 9.
Allen Iverson announced his retirement today. Iverson, the league most valuable player in 2000, said he’d like to continue playing. Apparently though, he wants to start for a winning team. The elite squads don’t seem to want the mercurial guard. On the court, New Jersey slipped to 0-15 as the Nets dropped a 93-83 decision to Portland.
Elsewhere around the NBA Wednesday, Indiana defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 86-73. Boston edged Philadelphia, 113-110. New Orleans squeaked past Milwaukee, 102-99, in overtime. Denver trounced Minnesota, 124-111. San Antonio hammered Golden State, 118-104. Charlotte thrashed Toronto, 116-81.
In other games tonight, Miami outlasted Orlando, 99-98. Cleveland dispatched Detroit, 98-88. Dallas crushed Houston, 130-99. Phoenix dismissed Memphis, 126-111. Sacramento handled New York, 111-97.
In the NHL Wednesday, New Jersey beat Ottawa, 3-1. Toronto edged Tampa Bay, 4-3. Atlanta blanked Detroit, 2-0. The New York Rangers defeated Florida, 2-1, in a shootout. Boston squeaked past Minnesota, 2-1, in a shootout. Calgary outlasted Phoenix, 2-1. Anaheim held off Carolina, 3-2.
Also in the NHL tonight, Philadelphia defeated the New York Islanders, 2-1. Washington shut off Buffalo, 2-0. Pittsburgh beat Montreal, 3-1. St. Louis survived Dallas, 4-3, in a shootout. Nashville edged Colorado, 4-3, in overtime. Los Angeles dispatched Edmonton, 3-1. Chicago throttled San Jose, 7-2.
Argentina leads midway through the first round of the World Cup of Golf in China. The event is comprised of two-man teams from 28 nations. The Argentine duo of Rafa Echenique and Tano Goya combined for an opening 61 to lead by one stroke.
